Summer Fiber Art
Summer Arts Institute 2008 -
Fiber Art Explorer
What a wonderful way to start the summer. Teaching young women to stitch. I had a great time teaching a fiber class to 3-6th graders last week for the The McColl Center for Visual Art Summer Art program. The week included a hand bound book project & a great fiber art doll. One of the students is showing us some of the dolls made during the class.
The students had no experience - that means had never threaded a needle - and taken a stitch. So these dolls were a great. The doll includes a shield shaped applique that we embellished before sewing it to the body fabric. We learned to use a sewing machine, create simple hand stitches, sew buttons, charms and beads, and had a bunch of fun sewing creating fun hair.
We all had a great time, and I was very honored to teach threading needles and making knots to this new generation of fiber women.
